Menedék director András Kováts signed a cooperation agreement on the 28th of February 2007 with General István Samu of the Border Guards. The organisations vowed to support each other in trainings designed for border guards, in promoting the rights of detained foreigners as well as the exchange of data regarding migrants. The cooperation dates back to 2005 when the association launched a training for 140 border guards working in detention centres. The goal of the training was to sensitize border guards on human rights issues as well as to increase their communication and conflict resolution skills.
The success of these training sessions are characterized by the fact that one of Menedék’s sponsors, UNHCR asked the association to deliver further trainings, this time broadening the target group to professionals working in the border policing field of the BG. Some 80 border guards will be given practical training in 2007 within the frame of the above mentioned project. The two organisations submitted a joint application to a European fund and if granted, the project will train record number of border guards.
