Psycho-social counselling and community services for refugees and asylum-seekers in Hungary

The overall goal of the project is to ensure that persons in need of international protection enjoy a sufficient level of reception conditions, as well as have access to local integration as a durable solution.

The project aims to promote reception conditions, accomodation services, to improve mental hygiene of asylum seekers, to enhance chances of minors to join education, family support as institutional services. The project aims also to promote self-empowerment of refugees and internationally protected people and enable such persons to provide for themselves.  Services provided:

1) PSYCHO-SOCIAL COUNSELLING: providing individual support for refugees, beneficiaries of subsidiary protection and asylum-seekers by social workers and psychologists in Debrecen and Budapest. Issues in focus: stable family life, education and school enrolment, local integration, social well-being.

2) LEGAL COUNSELLING: Regular legal advice and counselling to refugees and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection regarding the suspension and review of the integration contracts by the OIN, in reviewing their status (in case of subsidiary protection), in employment, family-law, and anti-discrimination issues.

3) OUT-OF-SCHOOL EDUCATION: Professional teachers and educators shall work with refugee and asylum-seeker children through individual (peer-to-peer) sessions as well as in learning groups. Besides formal learning activities, a great emphasis will be put on non-formal (community-based, leisure-time) activities and events, through which the more general social and communication skills shall be developed.

4) COMMUNITY WORK: refugees and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection shall receive empowerment as members of their local community through a series of community events and activities that are realised by themselves with the support of a professional community organiser. Involvement of members of the host society is essential, in order to strengthen the links between refugees and their local environment.
